BUDGET SUPPORTS RETHINKING COLORADO RIVER CONVEYANCE

With the 2020-2021 budget approval in June, the Water Authority started preparing to launch a study about the viability of a new regional conveyance system that would deliver water from the Colorado River to San Diego County and provide multiple benefits across the Southwest. Delivering San Diego’s independent Colorado River supplies directly from the Imperial Valley could be more cost-effective than the current system, which relies on paying a third party to transport Quantification Settlement Agreement water through the Colorado River Aqueduct to San Diego. In fiscal year 2019, the Water Authority’s supplies from the Colorado River Quantification Settlement Agreement increased by 30,000 acre-feet to more than 220,000 acre-feet.
