Water Authority Board Approves Terms and Conditions for Negotiating Carlsbad Desalination Project Water Purchase Agreement

The San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors today approved key terms for purchasing water from the nation's largest seawater desalination facility in Carlsbad.

Today's action enables Water Authority staff to begin negotiating specific elements for a water purchase agreement with Poseidon Resources, the private firm developing the Carlsbad Desalination Project. These elements include water purchase price, allocation of risk and options to eventually purchase the project's pipeline and the entire desalination plant.

All-American Canal Lining Project Named APWA Public Works Project of the Year

The All-American Canal Lining Project (AACLP), a major water conservation project whose benefits include improving San Diego County’s water supply reliability, has won the American Public Works Association (APWA) 2010 Environmental Public Works Project of the Year award for projects greater than $75 million. APWA recognized the project as a model for creating partnerships between local and state water agencies to invest in California water supply development.

Water Authority and City of San Diego Receive International Water Award

The San Diego County Water Authority and the City of San Diego Public Utilities Department recently jointly received the 2010 Public Water Agency of the Year Award of Distinction from the Global Water Awards. The agencies were selected from an international field of candidates for their leadership in managing scarce water resources in 2009 through the development of innovative projects and programs.

Water Authority Adopts 11.3 Percent Treated Water Rate Increase for 2011

The San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors today adopted rates and charges for water purchased in calendar year 2011 by the Water Authority’s 24 member retail agencies.  The total Municipal and Industrial cost of treated water will rise to $1,026 per acre-foot, effective January 1.  That is an increase of $104, or 11.3 percent.

Water Authority Ends Shortage Allocations, Lifts Call for Mandatory Use Restrictions

Significant improvements in this year’s weather and water storage led the San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors today to end mandatory urban and agricultural water supply cutbacks and to lift the agency’s regionwide call for mandatory water use restrictions.

The board also reinforced the need for the region to continue to use water wisely and called upon the state of California to finalize a financially viable plan to solve significant problems plaguing the Sacramento-San Joaquin Bay-Delta, the hub of California’s State Water Project system.

The San Diego County Water Authority is working with state regulators to certify the Claude “Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant as a drought-resilient local supply source that will reduce state-mandated water-use targets across the region.

More Than $31 Million Awarded to Water Projects in San Diego Region

The San Diego region has been awarded $31.1 million in grant money by the state Department of Water Resources for a variety of projects that will increase local water supplies, decrease water demands, improve water quality, manage stormwater, restore habitat and enhance species.

Governor Signs Water Authority Bill to Advance Water Recycling

Gov. Jerry Brown this week signed Water Authority-sponsored legislation designed to advance water recycling statewide. Senate Bill 322, carried by State Sen. Ben Hueso of San Diego, is expected to expedite a transparent and rigorous scientific assessment of “potable reuse” as a potential water source.

“California needs more high quality water and recycling is key to getting there,” Brown said in his signing message that urged state agency officials to move quickly.
