Supply Diversification, Water Efficiency Critical to Region’s Future Water Reliability In Updated Long-Term Water Management Plan

The San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors today adopted its 2010 Urban Water Management Plan (UWMP).  The plan, a key forecast of regional water demands over the next 25 years and the supply resources needed to meet those demands, calls for the Water Authority and its 24 member agencies to continue to implement and pursue supply diversification projects in response to growing demand and new water supply uncertainties.

Water Authority advocates federal funding for seawater desalination

The San Diego County Water Authority's plans to develop a seawater desalination facility continue to move forward as a result of recent legislative advocacy and action. The Water Authority board of directors today adopted positions of support on two US House of Representatives bills that would provide federal funding for the development of seawater desalination projects.

Seawater desalination to be studied at San Onofre

The San Diego County Water Authority board of directors today approved execution of a Memorandum of Understanding with Southern California Edison (SCE) to explore the feasibility of building a regional seawater desalination plant at or near the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS). SCE is the majority owner of the power plant, which is located on U.S Marine Corp Base Camp Pendleton.

Water Authority moves forward on seawater desalination

The San Diego County Water Authority board of directors today took two more steps forward in the development of the Water Authority Seawater Desalination Project at the Encina Power Plant in Carlsbad that could supply eight percent of the county's water by 2008.

The board authorized a $475,000 contract with Irvine-based RBF Consulting to provide environmental support services for the proposed Water Authority Seawater Desalination Project. Under the contract, RBF will prepare an environmental impact report for the project.

Diversification a key goal of Water Facilities Master Plan

The San Diego County Water Authority board of directors today authorized the release of a "Notice of Preparation" for the Programmatic Environmental Impact Report on the draft Water Facilities Master Plan. The PEIR will examine the issues and options related to water facilities and supplies needed to serve San Diego County through 2030.

Nation’s Largest Seawater Desalination Plant Marks One-Year Anniversary

In its first year of operations, the nation’s largest and most technologically advanced seawater desalination plant produced enough high-quality, drought-proof water from the Pacific Ocean to meet approximately 10 percent of the region’s demand. The Claude “Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant quickly generated significant benefits by relieving pressure on imported water supplies, reducing state mandates for emergency conservation measures in March and helping the region pass the state’s stringent water supply “stress test” in June. After completing construction on schedule, the plant was dedicated on Dec. 14, 2015, in front of more than 600 elected officials, community leaders and project […]
