New ‘Guide’ Offers Tips, Tools and Inspiration for WaterSmart Living

San Diego County residents now have a versatile and comprehensive resource for indoor and outdoor water conservation available at their fingertips wherever they go.

The San Diego County Water Authority on Friday published its “eGuide to a WaterSmart Lifestyle” to inspire, educate and empower homeowners to make water-efficient choices in their homes and gardens. The mobile, interactive guide is designed to reduce the obstacles between discovering interesting ideas – online, at a friend’s house or in a store – and turning them into reality.

Water Authority Offers Free Commercial Property Irrigation Checkups Through June 1

Monday, March 14 marks the start of Fix a Leak Week, and managers and owners of commercial or large residential properties can get help identifying leaks or other ways to improve their water efficiency through a free irrigation checkup program offered by the San Diego County Water Authority and Bureau of Reclamation.

The free irrigation checkups are available now through June 1 to owners and managers of multifamily, commercial, industrial or public properties, or residential properties of one irrigated acre or more.

Water Authority Defers Three Additional Capital Projects Until July 2014

In response to lowered short-term water demand forecasts, the San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors has deferred three capital projects totaling $68 million until at least July 2014. Thursday’s Board action, combined with 11 projects deferred in January 2011, postpones $150 million in capital expenditures and is projected to reduce wholesale rate increases from capital projects by $17 to $22 per acre-foot during the deferral period.

Water Authority Applauds Regional Water Savings as MWD Ends Supply Allocations

The following statement by Michael T. Hogan, chair of the San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors, is in response to the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California Board action today to end water shortage allocations to its 26 member agencies, including the Water Authority, effective April 13, 2011:

Water Authority Ends Shortage Allocations, Lifts Call for Mandatory Use Restrictions

Significant improvements in this year’s weather and water storage led the San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors today to end mandatory urban and agricultural water supply cutbacks and to lift the agency’s regionwide call for mandatory water use restrictions.

The board also reinforced the need for the region to continue to use water wisely and called upon the state of California to finalize a financially viable plan to solve significant problems plaguing the Sacramento-San Joaquin Bay-Delta, the hub of California’s State Water Project system.

Water Authority Poll Shows Public Likely to Continue Water-Efficient Practices

Over the past four years, urban water users in San Diego County have reduced their water use by 20 percent, according to the San Diego County Water Authority.  Now, a new countywide poll commissioned by the Water Authority found most residents plan to continue their water-saving practices under a variety of conditions, including the end of mandatory water use restrictions. 

Water Talks: Community Forum on Water Issues

As a part of California’s Water Awareness Month, the San Diego County Water Authority is inviting residents around the county to learn more about and discuss the region’s water supply and on-going efforts to ensure future water reliability.

A community forum will take place Tuesday, May 31, from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m., at the Water Authority’s Kearny Mesa headquarters, located at 4677 Overland Avenue.
