Water Authority Board Expands Conservation Efforts

The San Diego County Water Authority board of directors today approved an expanded water conservation plan that enhances current programs and adds innovative new programs to the effort. The plan, which places special emphasis on outdoor landscape conservation programs, will result in an additional water savings of 47,091 acre-feet over the next five-to10 years.

Water Authority Proposes Restructured Water Transfer Agreement

The San Diego County Water Authority Friday released details of a proposed restructured water transfer agreement with the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) that directly responds to concerns raised in Imperial Valley since the historic accord was signed in April 1998. The restructuring of the deal's first 15 years, officials say, amounts to a monumental step forward in resolving all outstanding issues.

Water Authority conservation program named best in Southwest

The U.S. Department of the Interior, Bureau of Reclamation, presented the San Diego County Water Authority today with an award of excellence for its residential high-efficiency clothes washer (HEW) voucher program. The HEW program was recognized as the top Water Conservation Field Services Program among four districts in the bureau's Lower Colorado Region. Each year, the bureau names one program among many water conservation projects throughout the Southwest for this award. The award was presented by Bill Steele, manager of the bureau's Southern California area office.

Water Authority welcomes release of water transfer DEIR/DEIS

Environmental documents related to the Imperial Irrigation District-San Diego County Water Authority water transfer have been released. The Imperial Irrigation District Water Conservation and Transfer Project Draft Environmental Impact Report/Draft Environmental Impact Statement was released for public review by the IID Jan. 18. “We welcome the release of the document as an opportunity for public discussion and comment,” said Water Authority general manager Maureen A. Stapleton.

Senate Committee hears of environmental impacts to Colorado River Plan

California State Senator Sheila Kuehl's Senate Natural Resources and Wildlife Committee held an informational hearing this week in Santa Monica to hear testimony about environmental issues impacting the implementation of the state's Colorado River Plan. Extraordinary State Demands Thwart Research on Seawater Desalination Technologies

The San Diego County Water Authority is closing down work on a potential seawater desalination plant at U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton due to extraordinary permitting hurdles and related costs created by the State Lands Commission staff, along with the decreased potential that the plant will be needed in coming decades.
