San Diego County Water Authority recognizes student Science Fair water projects

Megan Lopez, from the St. Francis of Assisi School in Vista, recently received second place honors from the San Diego County Water Authority for her entry in the 2004 Greater San Diego Science and Engineering Fair. Bernie Rhinerson, chairman of the Water Authority board of directors presented Lopez with a $200 award and plaque at the board’s April 22 meeting for her junior division project entitled, “Conserving Water and Minimizing Nitrogen Pollution.”

San Diego County Water Authority board to appeal preferential rights decision

Vowing to continue its fight to eliminate a system it deems unfair and illegal, the San Diego County Water Authority board of directors today voted to appeal a recent appellate court ruling preserving the Metropolitan Water District's preferential rights process. The board authorized staff to petition a review by the State Supreme Court.

Water Authority and city of Carlsbad release agreement on seawater desalination project

After several months of negotiations, staff from the city of Carlsbad and the San Diego County Water Authority have reached a proposed interagency agreement on the development of a regional seawater desalination facility. The facility, to be located at the Encina Power Station in Carlsbad, would provide a new, drought-proof source of water to the region, producing up to 80-million gallons per day of treated water (up to 90,000 acre-feet annually).äóÂäóÂ

Water Authority Wins Statewide Award for Carlsbad Desalination Project

The San Diego County Water Authority today was recognized by the nation’s largest statewide coalition of water agencies for innovation and excellence in water resources management with its addition of supplies from the Carlsbad Desalination Project. The 2017 Clair A. Hill Water Agency Award for Excellence, presented at today’s Association of California Water Agencies (ACWA) Spring Conference in Monterey, has been awarded annually since 1988 to exemplary programs developed by ACWA member agencies for managing and protecting water supplies in California. Live WaterSmart by Turning off Irrigation Systems after Rainstorm

Storms drawing moisture from the remnants of Tropical Storm Paine have delivered enough rain across San Diego County that irrigation systems should be turned off for at least 48 hours after the rain stops. By letting Mother Nature take care of the outdoor watering, residents and businesses are helping the region make the most of our water supplies while also complying with state water-use regulations that prohibit irrigating landscapes during measurable rainfall and for 48 hours afterward. Back to School: Water Authority Resources Teach Students to Live WaterSmart

As another school year begins, the San Diego County Water Authority is once again offering water-themed resources for schools, teachers and students across the region – and many of the opportunities are free. For more than 30 years, the Water Authority’s school education program has fostered an appreciation for San Diego County’s most precious natural resource. Water Authority board approves second power purchase deal with SDG&E

Entering in to its second hydroelectric power purchase deal in the last two months, the San Diego County Water Authority board of directors today approved a 25-year agreement to sell electricity from a 40-megawatt power-generating project to San Diego Gas & Electric. Estimated to produce approximately 53,000 MW-hours of energy annually, the Olivenhain-Hodges Pumped Storage project will generate electricity needed during times of peak usage in the San Diego area.
