The San Diego County Water Authority is urging residents and businesses to help the region conserve water by turning off their outdoor watering systems today and leaving them off for at least the next week as a storm system moves into the region starting tonight.

Appellate Court to Review Key Pre-Trial Decision in Water Authority Rate Case vs. Metropolitan Water District
Late Thursday afternoon, the First District Court of Appeal issued a preliminary order asking for further briefing on a request by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to prevent discovery in litigation filed by the San Diego County Water Authority challenging its 2011 and 2012 water rates. The court did not grant MWD’s request, or writ petition. It only asked the other parties in the case to set forth their positions on that request.

The San Diego County Water Authority board of directors today authorized staff to convene meetings with key stakeholders in the development of a regional seawater desalination project at the Encina Power Station in Carlsbad.

San Diego County Water Authority Calls on MWD to Cut Spending and Cap Rate Hikes at 3 Percent
The San Diego County Water Authority has submitted a proposal to the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California to cap its “average” rate increases for 2013 and 2014 at 3 percent. The rate cap would be accomplished through a $116.5 million budget reduction over the next two years. The recommendations were sent March 21 to MWD’s Board of Directors, which is expected to adopt a two-year budget and two years of rate increases at its April 9 Finance and Insurance Committee meeting and April 10 board meeting.

Water Authority planning repair work in Mission Trails Regional Park
The Water Authority announced today that it is planning repair work on one of its pipelines just north of the San Diego River in a remote section of Mission Trails Regional Park. The purpose of the work is to repair a few 24-foot sections of pipe, which are showing signs of deterioration. Construction is anticipated to begin as early as late January and last approximately one month.
Judge Rejects MWD Efforts to Avoid Discovery in Water Authority Rate Challenge
San Francisco Superior Court Judge Richard A. Kramer today rejected arguments made by the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and other Southern California water agencies that they do not have to produce documents to the San Diego County Water Authority disclosing how MWD set its 2011 and 2012 water rates.
