Water Authority approves basic rate increase $5 per acre-foot increase to enhance region’s water reliability
In a move aimed at ensuring a reliable water supply for the San Diego region, the San Diego County Water Authority’s board of directors today voted to increase the basic cost of water to its member agencies by $5 per acre-foot. The rate increase, which will take effect Jan. 1, 2002, was necessary to help fund the Authority’s $1.21 billion Capital Improvement Program. The CIP includes new pipeline projects, pumping facilities and the Emergency Storage Project (ESP).
Water Authority board approves second power purchase deal with SDG&E
Entering in to its second hydroelectric power purchase deal in the last two months, the San Diego County Water Authority board of directors today approved a 25-year agreement to sell electricity from a 40-megawatt power-generating project to San Diego Gas & Electric. Estimated to produce approximately 53,000 MW-hours of energy annually, the Olivenhain-Hodges Pumped Storage project will generate electricity needed during times of peak usage in the San Diego area.
San Diego County Water Authority Board Certifies SEIR for San Vicente Pipeline
The San Diego County Water Authority reached a major milestone today in its Emergency Storage Project. The Water Authority board of directors certified the final Subsequent Environmental Impact Report (SEIR) and approved the San Vicente Pipeline construction project, a major component in the $827 million Emergency Storage Project.
San Diego County Water Authority responds to Rancho Peñasquitos water spill
On Nov.18 at approximately 9:30 p.m., the San Diego County Water Authority discovered water flowing out of an air release/vacuum valve structure on the agency’s Pipeline 5. The structure is located in Rancho Peñasquitos just north of Carmel Mountain Road. Pipeline 5, which had recently been drained for routine internal inspection and maintenance, was in the process of being refilled when the incident occurred.

In its continuing efforts to ensure a safe and reliable water supply for San Diego County, the San Diego County Water Authority will drain and inspect an untreated water pipeline in its Second Aqueduct from Nov. 9 to Nov. 18.
New contractor selected to complete Moreno-Lakeside Pipeline project
Archer Western Contractors has been selected by the Hartford, the bond company for the San Diego County Water Authority’s Moreno-Lakeside Pipeline, as the completion contractor for the construction project. Archer Western replaces Kenko, Inc., which departed the project in July.
The company is mobilizing personnel and equipment and will resume construction on the pipeline within the next two weeks. The project is expected to remain on schedule, with a winter 2004 completion date.
Water Authority board invests additional $1.3 million in water conservation programs
Addressing the need to increase water conservation efforts as part of the region’s long-term water reliability strategy, the San Diego County Water Authority Board of Directors today approved the addition of $1,327,957 to its fiscal 2007 budget. The additional funds will increase the overall budget for conservation programs to $1,862,113. The Water Authority has projected that conservation will make-up 10 percent of its total water supply by 2020.
Water Authority Pipelines to be Shut Down for Regular Maintenance
The San Diego County Water Authority will drain and inspect two Second Aqueduct untreated water pipelines November 10 to 21 as part of its Aqueduct Protection Program.
The pipelines scheduled for inspection provide untreated water to treatment plants operated by City of San Diego and Sweetwater Authority (National City/Chula Vista/Bonita) water agencies. During the shut down the agencies will use local water supplies held in reserve. Business and residential water customers should not be impacted by the shut down.
