The San Diego County Water Authority is reminding residents and businesses countywide to conserve water during the hot summer months.

“We’ve found that as temperatures rise, so does water use,” said James Turner, chairman of the San Diego County Water Authority. “We just want to remind residents and businesses to keep up the water-wise habits that have become a way of life in San Diego County.”

Just some of the ways people can conserve water include:

  • Cutting back on water use outside. Use a broom instead of a hose to clean up, and water landscaping in the early morning and early evening. Water for several short periods instead of one longer period so the soil can absorb the moisture without wasteful run-off. Water only when necessary (grass is doing fine if it springs back after you step on it). Delay new plantings until the cooler fall months when new plants need less water and are more likely to thrive.
  • Practicing good indoor water-use habits. Shut off the water for teeth-brushing, use clothes washers and dishwashers for full loads only, take shorter showers and fix water leaks right away.

People can get more information on ways to conserve by contacting the city or water agency that provides their water. Information is also available by calling the Water Authority at (858) 522-6700, and on the Authority’s website, www.sdcwa.org.

The San Diego County Water Authority is a public agency serving the San Diego region as a wholesale supplier of water from the Colorado River and Northern California. The agency works through its 23 member agencies to provide a safe, reliable water supply to nearly 3 million county residents.
