Water Authority Advances Dry-Year Outreach
The Water Authority saw a significant increase in media interest in water issues between April and May 2021 as drought became front-page news and interview requests flooded in. An April 23 editorial cartoon by artist Steve Breen in The San Diego Union-Tribune highlighted how the San Diego region is prepared for drought due to the long-term water supply diversification strategy.
The Water Authority refocused its outreach efforts on how water supply investments provide security for the region’s residents while encouraging residents to “do their part” and "stay WaterSmart." Among other things, the Water Authority featured numerous drought stories on the Water News Network, held a social media contest to highlight the value of water, hosted a forum on supply-demand issues for Citizens Water Academy alumni, increased advertising in community news outlets, and created an outreach toolkit including social media graphics for member agencies.
“It’s especially important to highlight the efforts of our ratepayers, who have cut per capita water use by nearly half since 1990. Because of those actions and others, our residents have enough water for 2021 and future dry years. ”
