Proactive Asset Management

Major Infrastructure Projects Extend the Life of the Aqueduct System

The Water Authority’s infrastructure advancements and sustainability initiatives over the last year continued to build upon a strong foundation for future water security and environmental stewardship. Major aqueduct upgrades, desalination plant enhancements, and leading-edge pipeline assessment technologies extended the lifespan and resilience of vital infrastructure. This proactive approach will ensure consistent, efficient water delivery for the region while minimizing risks and supporting long-term ecological health.

The Water Authority’s Asset Management Program ensures the reliability and longevity of region’s water infrastructure by proactively rehabilitating assets before problems occur, using the latest technologies to detect age-related defects. In FY24, several asset management projects were launched or continued work.

Environment

Through regional agreements and federal grants, the Water Authority significantly slashed costs and embarked on environmental enhancements for the Claude “Bud” Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant in FY24. The Water Authority’s Asset Management team also developed a new, comprehensive technological approach to assessing concrete pipeline risks that will prevent catastrophic failures, ensuring that large-scale infrastructure co-exists in harmony with the region’s ecosystems and environment.
