The San Diego County Water Authority on Valentine’s Day kicks off a five-week smartphone photo contest designed to showcase how people cherish the region’s most precious natural resource.
By sharing a smartphone photo of water they love – or ways they love water – participants become eligible to win a romantic getaway at the San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter. The Love Your Water campaign runs through World Water Day on March 22, a day recognized around the globe to highlight the value of water and the challenges of providing it to a growing population.
“We are all attracted to water, whether it’s swimming in a high Sierra lake or admiring a fountain at Balboa Park,” said Jason Foster, director of Public Outreach and Conservation for the Water Authority. “This contest provides a creative way for people to show how much they value water.”
The contest is sponsored by the San Diego Marriott Gaslamp Quarter, which is offering one-night stays for two grand prize winners. The 306-room hotel is located in the heart of San Diego’s liveliest entertainment district. It is part of a company that is working to reduce its energy and water consumption 20 percent by 2020 as it develops green properties and supply chains around the world.
Qualifying photos will be posted on the San Diego County Water Authority’s Facebook page, where viewers can vote for their favorites with the “like” button.
One grand prize winner will be chosen by Facebook “likes” and the other will be selected by Water Authority staff based on the creativity of the photo, composition and how well it connects to the theme. Five runners up will each get four passes to the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center in Balboa Park, and the first 50 participants each will get a shower timer.
Love Your Water entries must be shot, edited and sent entirely on a smartphone. Images can depict water in San Diego County or elsewhere. Participants must be 18 or older. The use of filters is acceptable. Full contest rules are at www.sdcwa.org/love-your-water-photo-contest.
