Urban Water Management Plan
The Water Authority’s Urban Water Management Plan (UWMP) quantifies the regional mix of existing and projected local and imported supplies necessary to meet future retail demands within the Water Authority’s service area over the next 25 years.
The Water Authority released a draft of its 2010 Urban Water Management Plan (2010 Plan) for public review and comment May 6, 2011 through June 6, 2011, and held a public hearing on the draft 2010 Plan on May 26, 2011. Written and oral comments received on the draft 2010 Plan have been reviewed and incorporated into the final 2010 Plan, where appropriate. The Water Authority’s Board of Directors adopted the final 2010 Plan on June 23, 2011.
2010 Urban Water Management Plan
In 1983, the California Legislature enacted the Urban Water Management Planning Act (Division 6 Part 2.6 of the Water Code §§10610 - 10656). The Act states that every urban water supplier that provides water to 3,000 or more customers, or that provides over 3,000 acre-feet of water annually, should make every effort to ensure the appropriate level of reliability in its water service sufficient to meet the needs of its various categories of customers during normal, dry, and multiple dry years. The Act describes the contents of the UWMP as well as how urban water suppliers should adopt and implement the plans, requiring an update of the plan every five years. While the Water Authority’s plan includes specific documentation on development of the Water Authority’s supplies, the plans submitted by the Water Authority’s member agencies and Metropolitan Water District of Southern California will provide more detail on their supplies that contribute to the diversification and reliability of supplies for the San Diego region. Updates are completed to maintain the Water Authority’s eligibility for state grant funding and also provide updated information on the Water Authority’s supplies.
