An Inside Look
The San Diego County Water Authority and Water Quality

The operations and maintenance department's mission
is to operate and maintain the Water Authority's aqueduct delivery system
in a reliable fashion and at a reasonable cost to the member agencies.

The operations and maintenance department maintains and operates the water delivery system that distributes water to the Water Authorities member agencies. With more than 270 miles of large-diameter pipeline, 1,600 aqueduct related structures, which occupy approximately 1,300 acres of rights of way in San Diego County, the routine maintenance and operation activities also encompass two hydroplants, three pump stations, two flow regulatory structures, a water treatment plant, and extensive rights of way. The department provides services for the Water Authority’s aqueduct system through management of dam and reservoir operations, power generation, water quality programs, member agency water demands, maintenance of the fleet and heavy equipment, electro mechanical support, and management of emergency preparedness and security programs.

New facilities and programs accomplished during the last 2-year fiscal cycle include Rancho Penasquitos Hydroelectric Facility, Twin Oaks Valley Water Treatment Plant and associated Flow Control Facilities, Olivenhain-Hodges Pumped Storage, Quagga Mussel mitigation strategies and environmental regulation compliance, Energy, Asset Management, and Aqueduct Protection programs.
