Water Savings Performance Program

Metropolitan Water District provides $195 per acre foot of water saved or about $3 per 1,000 gallons saved to sites within San Diego County. Incentive is based on the potential for savings over 5 years. Eligible project costs include labor, hardware and up to 1 year of water management fees. Eligible sites include:

• Commercial Sites
• Public Sites/Schools/Parks
• Institutional Sites
• Multi-family Sites
• Residential Sites Over 1 Acre
• Recycled Water Sites (on a case by case basis)
• Non IAWP Agriculture Sites

Eligibility:

• No size requirements or minimums.
• Dedicated/irrigation and mixed meter accounts (mixed meter accounts: on a case by case basis).
• New Construction NOT eligible.
• Plant material is NOT eligible.
• Submeters could be included as part of a project cost.

Process:

  • Customer (site representative) contacts Deneice Cotton
  • Submit Statement of Interest
  • Submit Detailed Savings Plan (below is a listing of the type of information required. Additional information may be necessary).
    • Square footage of irrigated landscape, both before and after the retrofit
    • Anticipated cost of project components, installation cost, annual fee for smart controllers (if included as a part of the project), and estimated equipment life. Plants and planting costs are ineligible.
    • Project schedule that includes anticipated construction start, completion and operational dates.
    • Provide schematic/drawing showing the existing irrigation system, including location of controllers and meters supplying the site’s landscape water.
    • Provide schematic/drawing showing planned changes to the irrigation system and the location of all water meters providing landscape water.
  • MWD consultant determines if project is viable.
  • Contract executed for project. Site cannot proceed without an agreement.
    • Monetary incentive is based on anticipated savings over 5 years and project costs.
  • Site retrofits existing irrigation system and makes necessary design changes, if needed.
  • MWD contractor verifies work and issues up to ½ of the financial incentive promised.
  • Project is monitored for 1 year.
  • Final payment will be based on achievement of projected savings goals. Total payment will not exceed project costs or projected value of the water saved for the project.
