Right of Way
The San Diego County Water Authority is a public agency serving the San Diego region as a wholesale supplier of water. Nearly all county residents rely on water imported by the Water Authority. During more than 60 years of service, the Water Authority has delivered a safe and reliable flow of drinking water to the San Diego area.
Today, the Water Authority maintains nearly 300 miles of pipeline to meet the water needs of more than 3 million people. The Water Authority’s regional aqueduct system consists of large-diameter pipelines, plus 1,600 aqueduct-related fixtures, such as valve structures, flow control facilities, and pump stations.
These facilities are located within the Water Authority’s 168 miles of right of way. “Right of way” means land the Water Authority owns or has rights to use for the aqueducts and their facilities. Many years ago, most of the Water Authority’s right of way traversed undeveloped and rural land. Today, much of this land is urbanized with homes and businesses adjacent to the Water Authority’s right of way.
