Project Description

In fall 2007, the San Diego County Water Authority begins work on the Ramona Pipeline Cathodic Protection Project. Cathodic protection will extend the life of the Ramona Pipeline, which provides water to homes and businesses in Rancho Bernardo and portions of the city of Poway. This maintenance project is part of the Water Authority’s ongoing program to protect its pipelines and avoid emergency repairs and costly, disruptive pipeline replacement.

The Water Authority’s contractor will install cathodic protection to the Ramona Pipeline at 10 sites along Rancho Bernardo and Espola roads. At each site, typical work involves drilling one to five small-diameter wells, installing impressed-current anodes in each well, and installing cathodic protection test stations. The work will require closure of at least one lane of traffic next to each work site. The project is slated to be complete by spring 2008.

Constructed in 1989, the Ramona Pipeline is nearly eight miles long. It begins at the Water Authority’s Second Aqueduct near Rancho Santa Fe, and ends in Poway. East of Interstate 15, the pipeline is located under Rancho Bernardo Road and Espola Road. It measures 30 inches to 57 inches in diameter.

Fact Sheet

Project Schedule

Construction Begins October 2007
Project Completed Spring 2008

Work at each site will be performed in four separate phases totaling up to four weeks, with each phase lasting two to five days. There may be several weeks between each phase of work at a given site. The contractor will implement traffic control at each site to ensure a safe flow of traffic. At the end of each phase of work, the contractor will return all lanes of traffic before moving on to work at other sites.

In general, the contractor will move from east to west, from Site 10 near Lake Poway toward Site 1 next to Interstate 15. Up to three of the 10 sites may be active at the same time. The contractor will avoid working during commuting hours whenever possible to minimize traffic disruptions.
