The Water Authority's contractor first relined Pipeline 4 and then
followed up with Pipeline 3. Relining work is conducted via 40-foot-long
sections of pipe that are excavated to gain access to the interior of
the pipe and to introduce relining materials. These construction portals,
8 for Pipeline 3 and 8 for Pipeline 4, remained open for approximately
five months per pipeline. The same general locations were used for portals
for both pipelines. Not all portals were active at the same time, however.
Pipeline relining is done in several phases, and work shifted from one
portal to another depending on which phase was under way.
In addition to the construction portals, another 13 locations along
the pipeline will be used to support relining activities. Concrete,
ventilation and power may be introduced into the pipe at these locations.
No excavation will be necessary at these locations, which will be used
intermittently during the eight-month-long relining project.
