Letter to the editor: Common sense, vision and desalination

It will take family, friends and neighbors to help the obstructionists realize that there are benefits in allowing Poseidon Corporation’s desalination plant in Carlsbad to go forward.

It is common sense to tap the limitless supply of the ocean as our water source. It is physically, emotionally and mentally assuring, as well as healthier, to know that your water is coming from the ocean and not from someone’s toilet.

Vision from our leaders, politicians, scientists and entrepreneurs is needed to get past our dependence on water from the north, which could be reduced or severed by natural disasters, other environmental concerns as well as by politics. Is it within the realm of possibility to build a nuclear plant dedicated to desalinating ocean water by osmotic filtration and/or distillation and then send a river of potable water where needed? Has the potential for revenue and jobs and impact on the economy been studied?

Environmentalists, conservationists and scientists would appreciate the preservation of environments and species dependent on natural water flow. The water table of the region finally could rise back to normal, The region could be a water technology capital.
