Letter to the editor: Desalination and surfers’ sacrifice

Do we need to physically shake members of the Surfrider Foundation to remind them that Southern California is in a serious drought? The obstructionist behaviors of those that oppose a desalination plant in San Diego need a wake-up call. Yes, San Diego does have a growing population and a recent expansion in the high-tech industry, but we have no water for them to sustain a living. In the next year or two, we won’t even have enough water to sustain those that already are living in Southern California!

We should be encouraging the California Coastal Commission to hurry up and approve the plant. The fact that this type of project has turned into an 11-year struggle is incredibly frustrating. We already could be supplying that 50 million gallons a day of clean water that the plant could provide for our citizens.

The bottom line is: We need fresh water to live and we can sacrifice a surfer’s destination spot for it.
