North County: We must bolster area's water supply
Of course, managing our way through this recession is a top priority. But as important as this immediate crisis is, we cannot take our eye off a couple of projects that will affect our economy and quality of life for generations.
One project we need to get built, and one we need to stop. As the incoming chair of the San Diego County Water Authority, I will work to make sure the Carlsbad Desalination Project proceeds on schedule, breaking ground in 2009. This project is critical to our region, providing 9 percent of the county's future water supply.
On the flip side, I will do everything I can to stop another power plant from being built on our coastline. This land should be redeveloped in a way that enhances the economy, environment and quality of life for our entire region. Protecting valuable coastal resources is more important than energy company profits.
